UNH Carnival

UNH Carnival at Jackson, NH
2nd Carnival of the 2017 Season~

Thursday:
A group of us left at 9am and the others left around 2:30, after classes. Upon arriving to Jackson, it was kind of gray outside, but quite warm.  We classic skied the course for an hour on wax-less skis and zeros's; I found it kind of hard to kick on waxless, thus my skiing up hills resulted in some duck walking. The course was fun and very wavy; I started to get pretty excited for the races.

After struggling to find our condos in Bartlett, NH, we settled in quickly and started making pasta and lasagna.  Peanut butter in your pasta is actually pretty good, by the way; it tastes a little like Pad Thai. The girls condo was a really nice place, with a full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, a living area, 2 bedrooms on the first floor and a loft upstairs with multiple bunkbeds. The rest of the gang arrived around 9:30pm. We caught them up on race details and went to bed.

Friday:
Men raced first at 11am and women raced late at 12pm.  Everyone's trailers and vans were parked above, while tents and skis were carried down to the stadium across the street.  It was less than ideal, but it worked well nonetheless. It was neat to see only tents and wax benches gathered around the stadium. Men did a 10k and women did a 5k Classic 15 second interval start. It warmed up as the day went along, staying in the mid to high thirties all weekend. The snow was very sugary and the tracks had been sort of cleared away by the time the women raced.  It made it more challenging to kick up the hills, but it wasn't something us Saint's didn't know how to do. The first day was a disappointment for a lot of us. It wasn't where we wanted the results to be, but we continued to spread the positivity with our teammates.  That night, the coaches waxed their hearts out for us staying at the venue until 5pm. They did a fine job too, because our skis for the Skate race were phenomenal (more on that later).

The girls were all sitting around the table in the condo before dinner, chatting and hanging out, when all of sudden, I just happen to look at my watch and say, "Guys, we're late!!" and everyone bolts out of their seats screaming and laughing. You had to be there, but it was pretty funny. I wish it was on film, but actually we all grabbed our jackets and were outside right as the boys were showing up.

We dined out at Matty B's, a quaint little restaurant in a hotel near Attitash, which was only 5 minutes from our condos. I personally love when we don't have to go far for dinner and when it doesn't take long! It was relatively quick and good. People ate burgers, (GF) pizza, burritos, chicken, some salads were shared, and fish tacos. Simple, yet tasty. We convened back at the girls condo, where we had some nice bonding time as a team. We definitely needed to do this because we are often segregated in two separate vans and houses a lot of the time.  You could say this might have improved our results on Saturday too, who knows, maybe it's the secret. We played "Heads Up" which is a charade type game where a person puts the phone (in this case) or card, with some kind of noun on their forehead while the rest of the players act it out or describe it to the person to guess..it can get pretty dramatic and entertaining! We ended the night with a pep talk from Coach Townsend sending us positive vibes about what we should be trying to do for Saturday.

Saturday:
Men raced at 10 and women at 11:30. They were both mass starts, which our team tends to do well in. We like to chase those around us and we get excited to work off people. Women skied 3 laps around the 5k loop and the men skied 4 laps, phew! It was a long race for us all, but I heard a lot of "that was actually really fun". We should hear that more often! The women decided to go for the Lucy and Jackie approach and put sparkles on our faces! I should say that again..we put GOLD sparkles on our faces! We were going for the gold! I think it helped, because the girls had a more successful day than Friday as a whole;) I can't speak for the guys what they did in the morning, but I know they didn't have sparkles on their faces.  We were spreading the happiness that morning and getting into the race day zone. A lot of the girls had never done a 15k skate race so they knew they had nothing to lose! We were just going go out there and racing! It's just skiing.. The mass start for the women was kind of a mess per usual. It didn't take long before a UVM skier fell literally right in front of me and there was nothing to do. I was actually going pretty fast too and I went head over heals over her, while my skis stayed under me. It happened way too fast for me to really remember and now I know, I have a lot of bruises on my leg. I definitely twisted my neck funny because there was some slight pain as I boosted myself back onto my feet, as the whole collegiate field skied by me...I felt like I was in dead last. After that came the hill that was a wall that lead into the woods, and it was like my Eastern High School Championships at Mountain Top in Vermont my senior year of High School (shoutout to Lizzy Landry) re-lived all over again. The field had come to a complete stop..there was nothing you could do, but wait for the skiers to get up the hill. The snow was way more sugary and it was like mush, which made the hills really hard to get up, especially after three loops of it; my legs felt like lead. I know some others had trouble on the downhill turns; they were very skied off and you had to skid around them. After the race, while talking to the team, we all came to an agreement that our skis were wicked fast on the downhills.  We were making up time on other skiers and passing them! Thanks Coaches~

Check out India Harvey's Carnival videos from the weekend. Expect one from each day, every weekend! Subscribe to her YouTube channel for updates quicker! She even made it onto Fasterskier! They are awesome clips and we are happy to have her joining us each weekend to film. Even though she isn't racing this season, she adds a lot of positivity and fun to the team that would make the environment seem different if she weren't with us.

Day 2

Thanks to the parents for making us grilled cheeses and putting out a range of food! We love seeing you guys and having the support.

I know there was a slight request for a rap or poem, so maybe you'll be fortunate to see one next time:)

See you at Stowe,
Dana and SLUSKI

PS. This is our team Mascot; his name is Lawrence, but you haven't seen him yet on the trails because he is still in need of some SLU wear and skis...maybe he'll make an appearance soon.

SLU Carni Day 2

Today, day 2 was a physically tough day. The race was a 5k skate for the females starting at 10am and a 10k skate for the males, which started at 11:30am. It was a 15sec individual start right out of the field, up and up the homologated Ladies 5k course- our "home" turf.  I know everyone was grinding it out.   If anyone knows ladies 5, you would know that it's a lot of uphill, then rolling, then more up, and then a little bit more up and then a fun, fast, tricky downhill back into the stadium! The snow was melting and the morning was gray and misty. The snow was wet and snowball making material. The hills proved to be more difficult than anticipated. However, the Saints don't come marching in just for the sake of marching in..we come so with passion, determination, a positive outlook ahead! So..for those who had a hard day, we're going to shake it off and look towards gettin' 'er done next time!! On the plus side, our top scorers today were Lucy and Calvin in 18th and 42nd!

Embarrassing side note to spice up the life of this blog post.. Dana went to the port-a-potty (she just had to ask her parents, if it was port-o-potty or port-a-potty...) thinking she'd save some time, rather than waiting in the long bathroom line in the morning. Boy, was she wrong...She ended up going...and when I mean going..I meannn going the bathroom, if you know what I'm saying. So..She goes to reach for the toliet paper and (Jaw drops)..oh..crap...none left what-so-ever. Luckily, she remembers she saw India on her way to the port-a-potty! She cracks open the door, trying not to show too much to the busy ski world outside. She spots India, phew! She yells for "INDIAAA!" India turns around..she hears her name, but doesn't seee anyone..Dana yells for India again..and has her hand out the door waving to India! (Oh please come to me!) Dana open's the door a little bit wider, and finally, India comes! She says, "India, there's nooo toliet paper and I neeedd a lot!" India says, "Dana you'll probably just need to wait until the other person gets out of theirs..and Dana goes.."Can you get me some from inside?" Meanwhile, India leaves and Dana is just casually standing in the port-a-potty..oh yes, how lovely..just how she wanted to spend her morning. She hears people outside talking, "yeah there's no tp in that one..(laughing) Thanks to the SMC girl who knocked on the door and gave Dana some tp in the meantime! Finally, India came back with a massive, industrial sized roll of TP to save the day!

Tomorrow (Sunday), we'll see some of the freshman girls skate it out again in a 10k race! Stop by and cheer on your fellow Saints! They are all looking to continue on to JN's with another qualifier tomorrow.

I want to take this time to thank my teammates as they are best and very supportive, no matter what mood people are in! Thanks for putting up with us and caring about one another. You guys are the greatest and the love you guys spread, makes the team go round:)

We want to thank all of the parents for their support! We know that it was a haul to drive to Lake Placid, so seeing everyone come to our races means a lot. There was a lot of food this weekend and that means happy souls, so thank you very much! Thanks to Lucy's parents who hosted us for dinner Thursday night! Also, it was awesome to see alums Kyle Curry, Phil Marshall, and Adam Terko this weekend! Thanks for coming out guys!  If you are an alum, stop by our trailer and say hi! We are all Laurentians for Life, right?

See you on the trails,
Dana and SLUSKI

First Carnival!

Well, it’s been a long time since the first blog post where I introduced myself. Hard to believe that it was only several months ago. Since then, we have been through the trials of testing week, the horrors of 6:30 AM practice, and the huge volume of Thanksgiving camp. Now, although these were all hard, they don’t fully capture the hardest part of being a collegiate ski racer. See, the hardest part of being a ski racer is not the time trials or races that we write about, but simply finding the motivation to get out the door every day and have the consistency to put in the hours. It was all the workouts that we didn’t write about that got us to today.
And what was today?! THE FIRST CARNIVAL! That’s right, we all made it through the trials of training to arrive at the doorstep of the fast and fun (albeit a little crazy) 6 weeks that we call carnival season. SLU had the honor of hosting the first carnival. We opened with a classic sprint today and will follow that up with a skate 5/10K tomorrow. Some of us will stick around for a Mid-A JNQ classic 10k on Sunday. It’s been a lot of racing for some of us in the past few weeks, but the excitement of racing our first college carnivals on our home course with plenty of cheering friends and parents has gotten us through. In fact, I would say we haven’t just made it through, but excelled and had a blast.
We had a strong showing today in the classic sprint, though many are feeling as if their best effort will come tomorrow in the skate distance race. So, stay tuned. For now though, here is a recap of the great stuff that was happening on course at Mt. Van Hoevenberg today.

The course at Van Ho was the real surprise today. We arrived early to ski and found out that we did not have to go up quite so much of Main St. (the big climb) as we thought. This meant that there were lots of hard decisions about to double pole on skate skis or stride on classic. In the end all our guys (and most that I saw on course) decided to double pole, and the women were a mixed bag. Fortunately for the women, both striding and double poling seemed to be competitive choices.

Once we all figured out what skis we were using and the coaches finished their amazing waxing, balancing having to prep both skate and classic skis, we got to racing! The women went first and everyone seemed to have a great time in the sunshine, though as always there were mixed reactions in terms of results. Having fun (and looking pro with Saints face tattoos) is what matters though, and I think that mission was accomplished! The boys followed it up with some strong double poling and good fun (minus the face tats, though they looked pro as well).

Lucy ‘20 made her first college sprint heats and was very excited to get the chance to race some speedy girls. She went off in the first quarterfinal to finish 4th. Although she didn’t quite have the speed and strength to move on (Fun fact-double poling with your arms actually hurts your quads), she had a great time and was excited to get the chance to race such accomplished skiers.

We all stuck around to soak up the sun, eat some great food made by our wonderful parents, and cheer for friends on other teams. We ended the day with a full team photo that is sure to make it’s way to the blog at some point. Many thought that it was the hardest and most painful part of the day to stare into the sun and not squint… It’s tougher than it sounds.

Thank you all for your continued support; we wouldn’t have made it to the start line without you. Stick around for more news of tomorrow’s race and all the carnivals yet to come!

MSA/ EC #2!

We've been up to a lot lately and it's been a whirlwind of fun and surprises! We had a nice long break and were at Gore Mtn, MSA, and Quarry Road in Waterville!

Winter break was winding down and Jackie, Lucy, Dani, Waters, Matt, and Kate all went to Gore Mtn to race in two NYSSRA JNQ races. They all did really well!

The rest of us were making our way to Mont- Sainte- Anne in Quebec, Canada, where we would all end up that evening of Sunday the 8th.

(I do have to mention that we had to say goodbye to Ruben Castren for the spring semester because he is abroad right now in Kenya.  He would've had a hell of a season, but we wish him the greatest adventure out there and hopefully he'll send us a blog post sometime during the season!)

The girls team and the coaches were lodging in the base in temporary housing for the first night because there weren't enough houses available yet due to some kind of big event. I was so excited because I got to reunite with India Harvey, back from Prague! I had been waiting for so long to see her! It's nice having her finally back with the team and I think she thinks so too.

We all went over to the guys house and made spaghetti and meatballs.  On Monday, we endured the negative degree weather and went skiing in the morning.  MSA has beautiful snow, and lots of it! It was amazing! It was cold, squeaky snow and a little slow but that didn't stop us. We ended up going back to the guys house for lunch and hanging around until about 3:30 to move into our other houses next door.  It took them awhile to clean because the people before us were partying it up and had done some damage.

The skiing all week was spectacular and awesome! It rained twice, but by the time we got to the venue, it was snowing.  We did a time trial on Wednesday, for those who didn't race that previous weekend. It was a hard 5k skate race; the snow was so slow, it wasn't easy to push forward.  Dana might have tried passing Emily and made her fall.. sorry. ETown even made the start surprising by having us do laps around the terrain park until he had decided which person was going to lead out of the start; the start was a mystery for awhile. Here are the results:

Calvin 17:18
Dustin 18:04
Blaine 18:25
Ryan 20:34

It was a good race to 'shake out the cobwebs' from winter break to get back in racing mode! We stayed at MSA for a total of 6 days.

We had a lot of fun: bonding, getting back in the race mindset and doing a lot of skiing.  Alum Erin Perryman came back to help make meals for us hungry skiers and it was so wonderful! She made us lasagna, burritos, soups, salads, and spaghetti; it was so nice not having to do a ton of meal prep work, leaving us with ample free time to relax. We even did a yankee swap which was very funny and actually quite successful. These were some of the gifts:

Mini maple syrup
Chocolate
Honey spoons
Bubble bath soap in mini champagne bottles (Matt got these)
A mini sled
A snowball scoop
A piñata filled with candy (Dana got to hit it with a broom hanging from a ski pole inside the living room!)
Honey and spandex boxer shorts with hotdogs on them (look for Ryan sporting these)
Vanilla sandwich cookies
Princess Toiletry Set
Marshmallow pop and fake teeth
A McDonalds happy meal
Dustin's book (wrapped by one of the boys and picked by Dustin..funny that!)

We left Friday morning and journeyed to Quarry Road in Waterville, Maine. (My home state!) It was an uneventful ride despite the fact that Dana had to go pee soooo bad that we had to stop on the side of the road in Canada...

We arrived at Quarry road around 2pm-ish and it was extremely windy.  We skate skied for about an hour and discovered the snow was very icy and the sprint course was going to be tricky. The captains took the transit to the Best Western in Augusta, where we settled into our rooms and headed out for dinner at the Olive Garden.

Saturday was a longg day. Girls woke up at 6:30am and we didn't get back to our hotel until 6pm. However, it was an exciting and astonishing day. We had one person qualify in each kind of heat. Lucy and Dustin qualified in opens and Matt and Dani qualified in the junior heats! They all put up a good fight, as the sun started to go down and the temperature started dropping. It was a frigid day; we often kept popping back in the van and then stepping again outside as our teammates got back on the line for their heats. We stayed for awards and then headed out on our way back to the hotel, for BIG G's for dinner, where we got massive sandwiches and fries.  We all slept really well that night.

The results were funky all weekend and were changing every second, which was frustrating for all of us. The results say Lucy ended up in 2nd, but she was still 3rd in the qualifier. However, the qualifier times were messed up which made the heats all messed up, so we will take the results with a grain of salt.

Waters and Kate in our new puffy jackets!
Unfortunately, Waters took a crash and went off into the woods, head first into a tree. We are thankful she is alright!  She made us all a little worried since she was taken to the medical tent and people were rushing up the hill to help her. She got a little shaken up and scratched, but other than that she is still alive! However, we learned today she has a concussion.

Waters snapchat photo after she fell during the skate sprint at Colby (notice scratches on chin, nose, fat lip) Way to stay tough, Waters!

Sunday was much warmer and again quite sunny! The women's mass start 10k classic started at 11am and the men's mass start 15k started at 1pm.  The women's mass start was a little bit of a catastrophe as people started going down pretty quickly. I don't think there was one person on our team that didn't fall on both the men and women's sides of the team on Sunday.  It was yet again, very fast and icy snow on difficult downhill switchbacks. However, we still had a decent showing all around.

We hurried out of Maine and drove a grueling 8 hours home. We didn't get in to Canton until after 11pm and we unloaded the trailer right then and there. Unfortunately ETown was in the truck by himself and none of us knew he was feeling very sick. He realized he got food poisoning, making the trip feel just a little longer. Waters and I didn't get to bed until 12:30am; we were so tired we forgot what our room code was... Luckily, classes didn't start until today (Wednesday)- lots of time to rest back up!
