Recap of the two weeks before break continued

Post 2, Continued

So...the week of Dec. 11th, we were able to get back to Higley, our regular training stomping ground.  It was a little bit thinner than Star Lake, but with it being the last week of classes, it was nice not to have to travel as far.  The two main workouts for the week were classic ski intervals on Wednesday and then races at Nakkertok in Canada on Saturday and Sunday.  With the first Eastern Cup in Fort Kent, Maine, and it being right before the week of finals, we knew we had to come up with an alternative.  Nakkertok ski club in Gatineau, Canada was hosting a weekend of racing called: "The Candy Cane Cup".  They were just as awesome and productive for our team as an Eastern Cup and the race format of the weekend was almost the same.

On Saturday, Jackie, Lucy, Tim, Matt M, Matt Y, Ben, and GH all raced in the Skate Sprints and represented our team very well!  Saturday Results

On Sunday, our team again did great! With it being -10 when we arrived, the classic race was postponed an hour.   It was a 1.7km course for 5 loops. Tim, Nathaniel, GH, Matt M, all raced for boys. Tim got 3rd overall and Nathaniel got 8th!  Alum Phil Marshall placed 13th with GH not too far behind in 21st. Lucy, Dana, Erin, Eliza, Gabby, and Emily all raced for girls. Lucy placed second after a superb day on Saturday, with Dana not too far behind in 5th place! Erin also did well, placing in 12th.  Emily was clearly not feeling right because she ended up doing an extra lap! The course was 5 laps, starting in a field and gradually going up to a 180 turn around and coming back down into the field, but then going up a big hill.  Coming down the hill, you would gain more speed than you would expect and near the bottom you had to make a sharp left turn, but the turn was banked. With the embankment, lots of skiers were snow plowing making the turn very icy.  Nonetheless, the Saints had another great day! Although it was cold and the trail was tricky, everyone was in good spirits. The coaches also crushed the waxing job.

Thanks for following us! We are on break for awhile now.  Some of us head to JNQ races at Gore Mtn. on Jan. 5th, while the rest of us drive to Mont Sainte Anne in Canada.  We will then all have a week of training at MSA up until the Colby Carnival on the 13th at Quarry Road in Waterville, Maine!  We are excited and looking forward to seeing everyone on the trails!

Hope you are all enjoying the holidays and staying warm!

Recap of the two weeks before break

A bit delayed due to finals and wrapping up our first semester work, but now that we've been on break for the holidays, we can finally recap everything we did in the last two weeks before break!

The week of December 4th, two weeks before break, we went to Suny Canton that Wednesday and did bounding intervals to please the snow gods and sure enough, during the workout it started to look a lot like Christmas! It went from nothing on the ground to a good covering of snow, making the uphills a little bit slippery.  It was blowing so hard and it got cold real quick as the sun went down.  It was a great hard effort and the Saints pushed through.

Fresh 8” over night made some great classic skiing today. First ever Star Lake skiathalon happening tomorrow.
Bob grooming Star Lake
The next few days we went to Star Lake and the skiing was AH-Mazing! Thanks to Coaches Bob and Kyle for grooming, we probably had the best skiing in the Northeast.  It wasn't like any December skiing we have had in the past! Thursday was an absolute snow storm and the driving to Star Lake got a little bit hairy...you can ask the passengers in the back of Dana's van (Sorry, guys). The classic skiing on Friday was so beautiful and the fresh snow was just so nice.
Potentially some of the best skiing in the east right now at Star Lake... 4.5km+ of groomed trail with some good climbs. The team is lucky to have such an asset so close to campus!

Saturday was the first annual (hopefully?) time trial Skiathalon at Star Lake with Clarkson! The boys started first at 10:30am and the girls stated closely behind. The race was about 9k (2x4.5k loops) with classic first. The time trial was complete with a transition near the parking lot where we had to change out our classic ski boots and skis to skate, a mandatory 2 minute transition.  It was a great way to practice our pre-race routines and get another hard effort in. The day ended up being really beautiful.

Snow, Snow, Snow, Get on the Snow

By Nathaniel Perkins '21

After Thanksgiving camp ended, the Saints were allotted Sunday and Monday to rest up for the week ahead. Many took this an opportunity to catch up on sleep or work for the academically and athletically challenging week that lied ahead. On Tuesday, we went for a ski at Higley Flow State Park. The snow was shallow, but the excitement to be skiing again was high. However, the next day it was back to dry-land training for us. We did some running intervals right here in Canton to prepare for the hours in the van that laid ahead. Thursday through Saturday we traveled to Lake Placid to get on the loop ORDA had made down there. The loop was great, but we were definitely starting to get dizzy on the 500M they had pushed out, (especially ab boy GH who is two for two on the Triac breaks this week. I also snapped one, but let’s not talk about it..).

Dana excited about the mini loop in LP followed by Gabby, GH, and Nathaniel

To get on some more snow, we headed up to Nakkertok in Canada for Sundays session.

Team together after a hard interval session with Carleton at Nakkertok in Gatineau, Canada- Sunday, Dec. 3rd
At Nakkertok, we did some L4 intervals with the team over at Carleton University. It was nice to have some other fast skiers there, and we definitely pushed each other in the intervals. This was especially evident by the snoring on the van ride home. It was a tough week for us coming right off camp, but hopefully weeks like this will just make us faster going into race season.

Here We Go Saints!
