Meet the rest of the first-year boys!

Hi my guys!

My name is Ian “tickle me” Thompson, I’m from Honeoye Falls, NY and I’m a freshman on the ski team this year! When I’m not skiing you can usually find me sick in my bed crying, watching Netflix in my favorite socks! My other favorite activity is playing with my kitty kat Moe and my friends on the team! I started skiing when I went on a trip to Norway when I was a wee lad. It was there where I fell in love with the sport. In high school I was kind of a big deal. I was in French Honor Society, and I was nominated for cutest happiest guy. My skiing accomplishments are too long to include on this post, but just know I’m kind of a big deal.

Something really important to me is the movie Moana. I sing the songs everyday when I walk to class, I mean who couldn’t??? Moana is so cute too, I wish she were real because I would totally date her! I hope she likes older guys ;)

Well… I’m looking forward to winter!

Howdy howdy,
I’m Graham Branch from Bozeman, Montana. Bozeman was an incredible place to be raised, and it molded me into the fun loving and smiley person I am today. I was born in the town of Lawrence, Kansas on the night of December 13th, a cold and gloomy day. To be honest, I don’t really remember if it was gloomy, I was quite young.

From a very young age I was so fascinated by overalls. They are just so practical, comfortable, fashionable, and they have lots of pockets to keep fun stuff like bubblegum and snacks. I have a yet to be let down by the timeless classic that are my brown Carhartt coveralls.

I also take oral hygiene very seriously. I brush twice daily with my Phillips Sonicare toothbrush. I love how it is “Tough on plaque but easy on gums” and “takes up to 62,000 motions per minute.” Over the dental hygienist’s suggested 2 minutes that is 124,000 movements!!!! Unfortunately, because many toothpaste producers use sodium laurel sulfates in there oral products, and because I am allergic to that chemical, I have to have my mom ship me tubes of “Jason’s Power Smile," so that I don’t get cold sores.

One of my favorite things is cheese. I am so fascinated by how it is made and am so shocked by how many different flavors and textures can be created just through subtle differences in the culture and aging process.  In the summer I can often be found in a pretty field of wildflowers eating fine cheeses, contemplating my insignificance in the universe and how every breath I take is simply another breath closer to my last. Some days, if I’m bringing a special guest, I may even add an assortment of charcuterie to my basket.

I know what you’re all thinking, not whether or not I am single (even though I am), but what tips I have for someone looking to get into Latin ballroom dancing? Yes, the rumors are true, I was a Latin ballroom dancer through much of middle and high school, and I do have some tips for and aspiring dancer. Firstly, stop! Latin dancing is my thing and you have no right to try and steal my attention, for I live off of the dreams of those who wish they could be me.

-Graham

Hello, My name is Lauchlan Cheney-Seymour, and I am from the Lake Placid region of upstate New York. I have been doing nordic skiing for as long as I can remember and has always been a large part of my life. I have trained in many places so far in my career such as Park City, Utah, Lake Placid, and Caribou, Maine. I was part of a travel team (NYSEF) through high school and competed at two Junior Nationals as well as World Junior Trials for biathlon. I hope to continue getting faster as I train here at St. Lawrence and continue doing what in love.

38 PRs in 2 Weeks!

The first week of official practices (aka ‘testing week’) kicked off on Tuesday 10/2 with a bang – literally. We started the 3k test at 7am in the pouring rain, and were cut off 600m in due to thunder and lighting. We booked it inside, and went downstairs to run on the indoor track until Etown and Kyle sorted out what we were going to do. There was some fear that we’d end up running the 3k inside, but fortunately, the coaches decided to postpone.

A couple people opted to do the strength test in the morning, while the rest of us changed into dry clothes and tromped over to Dana. That afternoon, the rest of us powered our way through the strength test for some serious type 2 fun. Brian ’22 absolutely crushed it with a score over 300!

The 3k was postponed until Wednesday afternoon, but luckily, the temperature stayed in the low 60s. We didn’t go out as fast as Tuesday morning, but apparently a more measured start paid off: the men’s team average was one of the best ever, and the women’s team had the best average ever. Big PR Shout out to Jordan S. ’21 and Erin ‘19, who PR’d by just over and under a minute respectively! Kate '21 also wins the award for dedication for waking up and running almost an hour to a track to run the 3k by herself in France and improvising the strength test at a playground.

Friday afternoon brought the double and no Pole tests, which we do back to back. The DPole test was headlined by some fantastic performances from noted hardo Lucy ’20 and freshman phenoms Steph ’22 and Brian ’22. The No Pole test started about 15 minutes later, with a little chaos in the timing. I ended up hand timing the boys, which meant that I had a front-row seat to seeing Tim ’21 absolutely crush it, setting a course record of 8:07! Big PR shout out to Matt M. '21 and Eliza '21 in the DP and Jordan '21 in the no pole!

Eliza (L) and Dottie (R) hauling
Jordan '21 skiing smooth and strong
On Saturday, we rolled on over to River Road for some long skate intervals. Matt Y. ’19 managed to break a rollerski wheel, which I wasn’t aware was possible! Thanks to Jordi for some great pictures!
Pace train means less pain, more gain
Matt M. '21 crushing the workout
Gabby '21 (L) and Erin (R) '19 slaying in sync

Sunday was a distance classic ski, with the option to run at the end. It’s peak fall up here in Canton, so it was a really pretty ski. We lost Lucy and Steph for a hot sec at the end, as they’d opted to keep skiing instead of run, but thankfully they turned back up!

We’re all doing our best to stay healthy as cold and flu season rolls in, especially with the amount of intensity we’ve been crushing. Take this as your fall reminder to get a flu shot!
-Jackie

Since Jackie wrote this, and I fell behind on posting it, we had another big week of training. We’re now in a recovery week and on mid-semester break, so watching some snow flurries from home in a Lake Placid is feeling pretty great after all the hard work.

We did St. Regis last week (the week after all the tests Jackie wrote about) and were thinking we might get better weather, because it was earlier in the fall than the past couple years. However, as usual, we were greeted to a muddy, sleety mess. But, the first “snow” of the year is always special!

This year, the women went first (and Lauchie '22, because he showed up at the wrong time) as there were too many of us to do it all at once. It was tough going, but everyone put on a good face and even put up some fast times! Big PR shout out Jordan S. '21 for PR’ing by over 4 minutes in much worse conditions than last year! Straight up impressive. Also, serious thanks to Jordi for cheering us on, since she was injured (but 100% now!) and to alumni Calvin Swomley ’17 and Blaine Ayotte ‘17 for bringing donuts!!!

Jordan (L) and Gabby (R) '21 (Jordi photo)
The men followed after with some great times as well. GH '21 and Ben '21 cheered due to injury, but I think people had a good time, as it was no longer sleeting...
Better weather! (L-R; Matt M., Matt Y., Graham, George, Nathaniel, Tim, and Brian)

It is also worth noting that we had 2 max lifts from our new strength program Volt earlier in the week, and the longest rollerski ever (well for me at least), 3-3.5 hours with the craziest guys going over 36 miles, on Sunday. A small group had a great adventure decided to go up Algonquin in Lake Placid to find some sweet views and a little slice of almost winter for their OD. All the workouts were awesome, and thank you to the team for being such hard workers, funny people, and impressive athletes during these two “testing weeks”. Keep an eye out for more first year introductions, an update from Kate ‘21 in France, and the results of our last test, the River Road skate TT! Thanks for reading and happy almost winter!
-Lucy

Dottie (L) and Jordan (R) '21 are cool.
Thanks to Jordan for these great photos from the hike up Algonquin!
Tim '21 (L) and Lauchie '22 trying to be cool?
What a crew what a view (L-R; Dottie, Tim, Jordan, & Lauchie)

Lauchie '22 on the up 'n up
A note on results... These tests don't correlate to ski speed, rollerski speed is incredibly variable, and we really just look for improvement from year to year. * = PR. First years also came in with INCREDIBLE results, they just don't get *'s because we don't have previous results for them. I can confidently say that in my entire athletic career, I have never been on a team with this much positive momentum :) So get ready to watch them all crush this winter! I mean, 38 PRs in 2 weeks? Everyone PR'd in at least one test. Insanity!
