UNH Carnival Debrief!

Oh, so poetic. Roll Saints!

Hey friends,

This past weekend we headed west, over to my home state of New Hampshire for the first “carnival” race of the season hosted by UNH! The experience was nothing short of poetic- so I will briefly describe the weekend (or should I say weekdays?) of racing with a poem. Enjoy!

(Do note: Everyone, including coaches, and athletes had to wear face masks/ coverings at the starting area in the fields. Racers started individually to minimize time around one another.  No spectators were allowed. The only teams competing were UNH and our team. Our entire team took an antigen rapid test the evening before leaving and stayed in St. Johnsbury, VT to comply with NY guidelines.)

Three white vans and a red wax trailer
Departed campus on Wednesday around noon
Loaded with fifteen excited racers
Getting hyped with some bumpin’ tunes

Awoken on Thursday by the alarm in St. Johnsbury
The ladies loaded up and they were off to the venue
Shortly behind them were the men
Already looking ahead to the lunch menu (yum!)

The sun shone down on the course
Racers dawned their race suits with very few layers
Finishing the day with some strong results
Should we name Steph the most valuable player?

Back at the hotel the team was seen jogging
Followed by homework from the missed days of classes
The pizza came a tad late
But was eagerly consumed by the masses

When Friday morning rolled around
The temperature was -15 degrees with wind-chill
But the sun was shining yet again
And the team charged up the hills

Another strong day for both teams
We may have had tough competition
But our skiers held their ground
And had fun, which is always the mission

In all seriousness, we saw some impressive race results from the team last week! Some highlights were Steph Nichols '22 taking 2nd in both the 6K and 10K skate races and Tim Cunningham '21 taking 6th in both as well. Head on over to Bullitt Timing for the full results!

A huge thank you to all the coaches, race officials, Steve Fuller from Flying Point Road (for some great pictures!!) and all of the skiers that worked so hard to make a carnival race possible in such a tumultuous year. I know all of us athletes were beyond stoked to brush off the dust and see what our years’ worth of training could do for us!

We're headed to Lake Placid on Saturday for some friendly action against Clarkson on the new 5K competition course (since we won't be going to Maine for the Colby Carnival)! Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
