Welcome Back: Captain Dana weighs in

By Dana Hatton '18

We, the Skiing Saints are off to a good first two weeks of school with one week of Captain practices under our belts.

Having started school on August 30th, we have gotten to know each other quite a bit.  On the men's side, we are joined by 7 first years: George-Henry (GH) Werowinski, George Jarvinen (younger brother of former skier Henry Jarvinen), Ryland Belisle, Matthew Manwarring, Tim Cunningham, Ben Carnahan, and Nathaniel Perkins. For the women, we are joined by 5 first years: Dottie Anderson, Aliya Brown, Jordan Schuster, Eliza Thomas, and Gabby Wrangler! With so many new first years, we have noticed an added height difference to what was a group of shortys!

SLUSki all together after the race!
Back Row L-R: Tim C, Matt Y, GH W, Ben C, Matt M, Nathan P and Coach Townsend.
Front Row L-R: Lucy H, Jordan T, Emily S, Eliza T, Kate A, Dana H, Jackie G, Gabby W and Jordan S.

We kicked off the fall training season strong by running the Annual Alumni Race: Race for Ryan for the Cross-Country team, which was held on Saturday, September 2nd. With the two options of 5k and 6k, the guys added the extra kilometer while the girls stayed with the more optimal 5k. It starts in the soccer fields and loops around the woods, with one short steep hill. The team, for those who ran, posted some impressive results, note: former SLU Skier Ryan Young ran under Emily Siegel.
Women's 5k Results: 11. Lucy H., 16. Dana H., 22. Former SLUSkier Ryan Young as Emily Siegel, 24. Kate A., 25. Eliza T., 26. Jordan S, 30. Jackie G
Men's 6k Results: 22. Tim C., 26. Matt Y, 27. Ben C., 28. Matt M., 32. SLUSki Alum Blaine A., 33. Coach Townsend., 34. Nathan P., 38. GH W

The first week of captain practices included some awesome rollerskiing on Judson and Schoolhouse roads nearby, along with some intervals at Irish Settlement in Colton.  We ended the training week with a beautiful OD at the Stone Valley trails in Colton! The fall weather has been treating us nicely! It hasn't been as hot and muggy as it was at the beginning of last school year (knock on wood this continues).

We are all getting excited for the leaves to change and the brisk mornings full of frost.

Stay in touch with us as we give you an overview of almost every week from here on out, starting with introductions from our newest members of the team!

We have created blogging teams to add some friendly competition to our already competitive selves. First team to write the blog posts this week is the group who call themselves the: "Dana Worker's Union", which includes: Captain Dana (wants it to be known that she did not help with the name), Jordan Schuster, George-Henry W., Tim Cunningham, and Jackie Garso.

First up tomorrow, hear from Jordan Schuster and wait to learn abut GH on Tuesday!
